What is health coaching?​

Health coaching is a collaborative process whereby a professional health coach supports clients in making positive and sustainable changes to their health and wellbeing. It focuses on empowering individuals to take control of their health by setting realistic and achievable goals, developing strategies, and building the skills and confidence to achieve them. Health coaching incorporates a holistic approach and increases the motivation within individuals to achieve their desired outcomes.

What does health coaching involve?

​​​

Health coaching involves a series of either one-to-one or group sessions between clients and a health coach. These can be conducted face to face (in person or via video calls), or via telephone calls. Sessions primarily focus on what is important to individuals and can involve goal setting, developing action plans, promoting self-awareness, addressing coping mechanisms, and bridging the gap between information and action. Sessions are spaced out according to each individual’s requirements, but usually occur every 3-4 weeks.

How does a health coach differ from a nutritionist or a personal trainer?​

​

A nutritionist focuses on an individual’s nutritional needs and provides guidance on food choices, whilst a personal trainer focuses on exercise, fitness, weight and body composition. Both nutritionists and personal trainers tend to give advice and tell people what to do.

A health coach takes a holistic approach and addresses all lifestyle factors, including nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, interpersonal relationships etc. A health coach helps to increase motivation and empowers individuals to make their own decisions and supports them with this, rather than telling them what to do.
